Case Study: Ring separations in MArch

Arch ring separation is a common defect in brick arches. It can be modelled easily using MArch. Tangential initial cracks are introduced to represent the defect. In the cracks, joint elements are used to simulate structural behaviours of the arches.

A five metres span with fully ring separated brick arch was tested physically. The ratio of the computed collapse load from MArch to the tested collapse load is 0.96.

The following picture displays the computed deformed arch ring before collapse. The crack patterns were compared well with the actual crack patterns obtained form the experiment.
